Use uniform boxes
Where possible try to use just a couple of different size boxes, this makes stacking them in the van and in your home much easier. Fold opposite flaps towards each other and tape them together, it is best not to fold them in a criss-cross fashion. Every box should be sealed at the top and bottom with tape.
How to fill the boxes
Use the smaller boxes for the heavier items, books, records etc. Use the larger boxes for lighter items, clothes, bedding, toys etc. This is not to make it easier for the removal men, when the boxes have been delivered to your new home you may have to lift them when you are doing the unpacking. Wrap all glasses and china in paper so they are well protected. Plates should be placed on their edge in the box and not flat. Books should be laid flat in the boxes, not on their spines, to prevent damage.
Pack any small pictures that will fit, in a box.
Try not to overfill boxes
When the boxes have been packed and taped they should have a flat surface top and bottom, if they are overfilled they are difficult to stack and items inside could get damaged.
Label the boxes
It is important that all boxes are labeled. Use sticky labels or a marker pen on the boxes. Write on each box the room it is going to at your new home and a brief description of the contents. You should label the boxes on the top and the side, that way it is much easier to find the box you need after they have been stacked in your new home.
Special boxes
If you still have the original boxes for a product it is best to use them.
